Healthcare and Hospitality

Designing Spaces and Relationships that Last!

Welcome to Tumbleweed Interiors.  If you are a progressive health, wellness or senior living professional embracing the new wellness-based model of healthcare, you’ve come to the right place.

I’m Rhea Mader and I’m an interior designer for healthcare facilities.  I help patients and residents live independently with hope and dignity.  My designs improve the quality of life through cost-effective, eco-friendly, high-quality, and evidence-based design.

I know many of you are up late into the night wondering and worrying about things like patient retention rates, insurance billing, and snow blindness from the piles of white paperwork.

I know you are concerned with things like fall reduction, noise levels, air quality, infection control and the impacts of aging.  Are you asking yourself questions like?

  • Do I need an interior designer or an architect or both?
  • How much will the interior design of my new space or my remodel cost?
  • How can this be broken down and planned out in an attainable way?
  • How do I take care of all these details and still do my job too?

My designs are based on evidence that supports the best results for healing and regeneration in healthcare environments where healing can be delicate and decisions are often justified by data.

If you feel dissatisfied and ready to welcome more patients, clients, and residents into an emotionally healing, visually appealing, professional atmosphere, I’d love to consult with you.

Interior Design Central Kansas Midwest Sustainable Healthcare and Hospitality Senior Living Design Firm

Hey there, I’m Rhea, founder, and principal interior designer.

I love science but I also love art.  Yes, I have one of those unique brains that get both.  As a young child I wanted to be an artist or a writer, but as I grew into a young adult I struggled to wholly embrace the artistic side of myself.  I’ve explored and pursued lots of career paths – dentistry, psychology, speech-language pathology (I do have a bachelor’s degree in that one) but I finally found my passion in interior design.  Specifically, sustainable design for healing and hospitality.

I decided to go back to school as a non-traditional student and earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Art in Interior Architecture and Design.

My journey through design school showed me that design is so much more than decorating (which I already had an innate talent for).  I was in heaven learning about things like the psychological human response to color, natural building materials, healthy indoor air quality, and how innovative design practices such as biophilic design is not only healing but regenerating for the mind, body, and spirit.  It may be nerdy to be so excited by the scientific data and evidence-based design but that is me, 100% scientific and artistic interior design nerd.

My hands on experiences as a designer have lead me through projects where I have further discovered my gift of therapeutic and restorative design.

Looking back, it is evident that my compassionate soul led me right where I need to be, in a career that allows me to create with art, explore science, and design with empathy.

Some of the most gratifying educational and professional certifications I have earned are:

  • BFA-IAD – Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture and Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco, California.
  • LEED GA – Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Green Associate
  • CLIPP – Certified Living in Place Professional

Awards and Recognitions I am honored to have received:

  • ASID Gold award for Commerical Healthcare – Bethany Home Assisted Living Community
  • ASID Gold award for Commerical Hospitality – J.O. Sundstrom Conference and Event Center
